NEW BUILDINGS
WEH Stanner Building, ANU
As the first new building on the ANU’s Acton Campus for many years, the WEH Stanner Building was designed to create a new public face for the Humanities Research Centre and Centre for Cross Cultural Research. The building is linked to and indeed compliments the historically significant Old Canberra House and creates an attractive landscaped hub between the old and new. In deference to Old Canberra House, the new building has been divided into two wings accommodating academic offices, with a central link accommodating the main entry, library and staff break out areas. The two wings of the building incorporate the language of Federal Capital Architecture with its simple pitched terracotta roofing and white rendered masonry. Juxtaposed against these wings is the striking entry with its cubic roof form. The landscape space between the two buildings solves issues of vehicle drop-off and service delivery and a significant level change. This development has become the heart of the Acton Campus and incorporates attractive landscaping and a significant artwork.
