Commercial Building, Florey

In 2004 a development consortium purchased Block 28 Section 143, Florey as a vacant site with an approved development application for a two storey commercial building. The consortium had the option of simply building what was approved but were concerned that the proposed development was bland and elected to try and improve the quality of the outcome in a bid to attract tenants to a suburban location. AMC’s design concept built on some of the fundamentals of the approved concept to retain the development rights but make sense of what is fundamentally an awkward site. The building’s simple form is made interesting through the incorporation of a skillion roof line which also acts as a striking walkway along the western façade of the building. An interesting combination of materials, colours and geometry create a striking address to the Florey Shops and indeed from John Cleland Crescent to the rear. A simple and logical foyer arrangement links to tenancies at ground and the first floor. The building has been well tenanted as a mark of the success of the development.
